tl;dr - Trevor's parents are traveling ace trainers and him reading plenty of books about Pokemon and becoming a nerd was coping mechanics against loneliness. You could probably spin it into him becoming a trainer to chase after his parents. You could even add them to the game as random double battle in Victory Road, kinda like how Winstrate Family's oldest son is an NPC in Hoenn's Victory Road.
Also, Tierno was born in wrong generation. His quirk of being a dance dude obsessed with Pokemon moves would work perfectly in Alola where entire gimmick is based on dance-like moves, there's a quirky specie of dancing bird Pokemon and professor is a Gigachad researching Pokemon moves.
Unironically Shauna and Calem/Serena are most boring "rivals" for me in XY because they both are just flat repeats of friendly rival and competitive rival. At least Shauna has her quirk with being good at puzzles and being friends with Clemont and his little sister so you can make something with her helping them invent puzzle for their gym or something.
