>>57801036I guess one weird part of the Emerald arc is how overly friendly Sapphire (and Ruby) were to Emerald, despite how rude Emerald was. But it could also be explained away by how RS were briefed on the Frontier mission before meeting him. It's not hard to imagine Crystal begging them to be nice to a
disabled orphan even if he sucks. Sapphire's easy to guilt trip, on top of her wanting to help her seniors and contribute to society. All this was part of her character in RS
even before the romance stuff. Interestingly, nearly everything people complain about Sapphire in the Emerald/ORAS arcs aren't new character traits, they can often be traced back to her literal debut chapter in RS. The traits are just less obvious back then, but get spotlighted more/less over time, for better or for worse. For example, Sapphire's always been a sentimental bleeding heart to the point of retardation, that's why she kept saving Ruby's ass in early RS, when a normal person might've considered just letting him die by the 3rd time (he's annoying). Or how she didn't take the chance to get back at Roxanne for making fun of her illiteracy, she just forgave her and let it go.
But that was all also during the limited time period where Sapphire was truly the MC of her own story, later on she's forced to share the space with Ruby. If she suddenly got a new storyline where she's the sole MC again, it'd quickly become obvious that all the problems people attribute to "Sapphire's character being ruined after RS" could just be a matter of her sharing the spotlight for so long. Even after ORAS, in a theoretical Sapphire solo story, it'd probably turn out she never changed that much from RS, let alone got ruined. It'd instead be obvious Ruby changed way more (him being a simp isn't just a meme). Also I don't think Sapphire being mushy with her significant other is a war crime, just because mushiness is "girly".
