Still, using them was the best choice anyway because they have striking and unique designs, making it easier for kids. It also helps that all of them have appeared in the last two Nintendo consoles. This also makes it easier for Pokemon fans who don't view the anime. They could check it out if they are curious.
Using Tobias, Tyson, and uhh Virgil for example, would be a bad idea. These are characters a lot of people don't know about. I guess Alain is a unique case but they made it obvious that he's filler anyway so as far as the kids are concerned he's a nobody.
