>>42567336I don't even think its really about 4Kids. The original dub was good for its time, but it, especially towards the end, was never especially good. (I actually think Veronica Taylor got so bad towards the end that her Ash is probably only equal to Sinnoh's Ash)
If the dub had switched to something of better or even equal quality, there would have been little issue as I really doubt fans that even knew about the dub change made up more than a small fraction of the audience. I legitimately think the problem with the anime in the west is that the modern dub is so bad that even kids can see how lame it is; the dub sounds like something you'd find on Nick Jr. when the anime is meant for a slightly older audience
