Veronica Taylor was bad at the beginning of the first Season, nasally and deep, but got much better as it went on and was great the remainder of the eight seasons-- and is still the best Ash.
Kayzie sucked, and would never have worked, she made Ash sound like a grandmother instead of a boy. Sarah was bad, but did get okay around BW.
Regarding James, he left out Jimmy Zoppi/Cathcart got worse than ever in Kalos onward, into Journeys, sounding stuffy, whiny, nasally, and like an old man to boot for 10 straight years. Eric was never that bad, not in Hoenn as Zoppi was in Sinnoh or in Kalos onward (I could see why some would like the BF and BW takes, but he was still worse than Eric for 5/8 years even there).
And Ted Lewis wasn't a perfect equivalent to miki
