One thing I've noticed is that XY's biggest and most vocal fans tend to be the "I dropped the anime and returned for XY" crowd, a crowd that also tends to skewer older and be fond of more "mature" series. It's even suggested by posts such as

Meanwhile, SM seems to be more popular among OS fans, continuing fans (meaning those who had been watching the anime before XY and never stopped) and newcomers. And the funny thing is that, with very few exception such as Famon (who's a shitposter), most SMfags online either don't hate XY or even loved it.
How come many XYfags vocally hate SM, but SMfags don't really hate SM? There are exceptions and there are many people who liked both series, it's just that I noticed that XYfags hating SM is more common than SMfags hating XY.
