My guess is that the more passionate XYfags bailed out when they show how different SM was going to be, and continued that resentment when it became clear that SM was very different from XY in terms of style and writing. Meanwhile, many SMfags were also newcomers or returnees to the anime and perhaps found it hard understand how SM was so different compared to previous seasons.
