Yajima utterly cucked them. Everything in XY is utterly irrelevant. Greninja? Who cares, he lost and became a gardener. Serena's crush? Doesn't matter since Ash doesn't age or understands romance. Ash saving the world? Been there done that.

This is why Ash losing the league was so bad. It made the entire series irrelevant. It is even worse now that he won the league in SM.
