Because there are a lot of XYfags who hate SM, but keep using /patd/ out of habit. I got the impression in SM that the writers don't even want to write pokemon. They are just stuck in a job they don't care about and had to make it pokemon related. XYfags are a pain and the season is massively overrated but at least that was a show about being a trainer.

Maybe instead of saying "watch XY instead", it should just say "watch previous seasons instead" as a compromise instead. Would placate both the XYfags and the anti-XYfags, since those seasons would still fall under "previous seasons".
