Ash vs Cynthia as apposed to Ash vs Iris would be bad writing because there's no justification for that match up to happen compared to the other. Ash and Cynthia have had no interaction whatsoever related to battling or the PWC, there's no emotional connection at all, no potential to display growth. Meanwhile, thanks to having faced her earlier in the PWC, we have an opportunity to see Iris going all out, without playing therapist for Ash's mons in the middle of match. Not only that, their connection as companions is much closer than the one Ash had with Cynthia, meaning the emotional stakes of winning over each other is much higher. Seeing two close friends battle it out when only one can win it all is powerful drama. Meanwhile the only justification for Cynthia vs Ash is pandering to DPfags who think the writers give a shit about one scene 12 years ago where Ash imagined himself fighting Cynthias. Newsflash, they don't. They care about this season and its story, not whatever fanfiction you wrote in your head.
