The characters they interact with, situations they find themselves in, and events that they are a part of all contribute to the character writing, and why this is important is how the characters are portrayed in the aforementioned things and what those things that the writers deliberately choose were. How Ash interacts with people opposing him, his degree of competence in anything that would make him look like a badass, whether it made sense or not, the way the drama was overplayed whenever he would suffer a loss. Whether he's "edgy" or not is irrelevant, it's now his actions and reactions, even the ones he would normally do and have and do, are portrayed to give us an impression of a character that is atypical of the usual Ash.

Also, it having no gym's as a requirement doesn't matter much when XYfags complain about a hell of a lot of other things that they purposefully included to the league that they didn't need to if their goal was really to apologize to seething XYfags. In reality, the win in Alola was just the time and place where they decided it was time for Ash to win the league and move on from repetitive badge quests and had as much to do with the Kalos loss as it did with any other series loss.

People hate the Kalos disaster. It's a fact. People hated it so much because they actually cared and gave a fuck over XY.
Unlike SM, which people hear how Ash won a league, so the JUST face of his, laughed and fucked off. Nobody gave a fuck and even in-universe it's considered a joke of a league.
The only reason why he didn't lose again it's because the sheer spite of XYfags was too much for them to handle.
