In XY, Yajima gave the false impression to a lot of viewers that Kalos was the strongest region. It followed a lot of the story beats from DP, which at the time was the strongest region. And SM didn't really contradict this either by showing Megas and Z-Moves as roughly equal in power, and Ilima participating in the Kalos League.
It didn't help that XY and the XY movies were legendaries overload, further inflating the sense that the Pokemon and trainers were on another level.
