It was the same reason he and Goh were absent for most of Dawn's first Journey's episode, to give Koharu and the returning girl time to interact. The obvious difference is that they had no intention of bringing Serena back after that episode while they knew Dawn was getting more, so they had to have them interact somewhat before she left forever. It's obvious that the writers are done with amour so I'm not sure what else people were expecting.
