Just hold out and wait for SunMoon.
Otherwise, the game is stuffed to the gills with Gen 1 Pandering and more Pokemon stuffed in each route than ever before. Like, 150 Pokemon before you are a third of the way through the game. The first Pokemon you encounter is a Pidgey, so you're only forced to use a Kalos Pokemon for two encounters (Rival Battle + Pidgey), if you so choose.
I like Pokemon XY but it is notably lacking in a few areas. There isn't much structure to post-game activities- Battle Maison, Friend Safari, Looker Sidequest, Hunting for Mega Stones, and three legendaries (Bird, Mewtwo, Zygarde) are all there is. The main quest is pretty bare-bones Pokemon- aside from minigames in Pokemon Amie and Super Training there aren't cool diversions like Secret Bases, Underground, Contests, etc. And Mega Evolutions + New EXP Share tilt the difficulty pretty far in the player's favor- as an adult you can easily mitigate it by just not using certain features but its undeniable that the game is easier, and for some people that's a horrible travesty. I mean, it's a kids game, I don't personally hold it against it, but some people hold it against it.
Also, it has the worst rivals in the series, barring Ruby/Sapphire. The story is absolute bonkers, too.
At least the region itself is really pretty and full of character. Probably the best designed region we've had thus far.
tl;dr I like it but it has its problems. I'd normally say its worth a try but with Sun and Moon just around the corner you should probably just sit tight.
