>>58869715I think I've settled on FRLG being my favorite as well in recent years.
I love a lot of Pokemon games, but Gen 1 will always have a special place in my heart, and FRLG is perhaps the definitive way to play Gen 1. I've replayed these games more than any other in the series, I simply never get tired of them. I love going through Kanto, sometimes using my old favorites, sometimes using new fuckin weirdos or strats I've never tried.
On top of the general modernizing, expansion of content, and aesthetic upgrades (all things I love), what solidifies it for me is it's ecosystem -- It's interconnectivity is naturally superior to Gen 1.
Ive been playing through Gen 3 as of the last year or so, to set up a permanent save file on FR and Emerald so I can work on doing Ribbon Master challenges, sending mons up through the generations. I regularly swap my Pokemon around the different cartridges, spending time EV training, Shiny hunting, filling the Pokedex, etc.. in FR, and then back to Emerald or Orre for their features. Hoenn's another of my favorite regions, so having direct connectivity between the two is great. Running around Kanto and the Sevii Islands with a Latios and a Shiny Zard in my party is incredibly gratifying for me, its not something I can replicate on the original games.
RBY are great, but being the first games, they dont have quite the same degree of expanded playability that later games do, and outside of the VC releases and external hardware, mons cant be traded up.
