He did do cool things in XY don't get me wrong, but they should have gone further and have Ash win the Kalos league without any gimmicks not even a mega. It would have been a great way to show how Ash has grown as a trainer, and the intensifty of the Kalos league would cause Ash to go to vacation in Alola.
Hopefully Ash-Greninja will bring some sakuga when he appears in SM. PM2019 is lacking Sakuga, and the posters do seem to pair Greninja with Zeraora so that'll probably be his first win against a mythical/legendary since the rest of Ash's aces have battled legendaries or mythicals.

I would argue that PM's artstyle is not as afraid of using shading as SM's. SM besides obvious sakuga felt like it had no shadows whatsoever.

God, there hasn't been one real memorable battle yet. The only one being Ash VS Korrina, but even than the entire battle except for the end was forgettable.

I think it’s just the general quality of the opening. She’s never appeared in anything sakuga and the opening in general looks better than the average episode.

The scene you posted conveys bunnelby's speed and positioning. Imagine it with speedlines. Positioning is gone because they are teleported to the speed lines dimension and sense of speed is gone because the speedline backgrounds imply both are moving so fast as to blur the background. I get it, you want to defend SM because you like it, and as I said

Which I confirmed by peaking sakugabooru and finding an SM scene that uses 3D backgrounds in addition to 2D without ever transporting to the speedlines dimension. And this is grade A sakuga in SM with the only criticism (which is more of a nitpick) being that pikachu is running way too long in the 2D section and the lack of putting pikachu in the same shot as hariyama makes it jarring when after all that running pikachu is only halfway across a very small battlefield. but again, still amazing.

Please don't consider criticism as an attack.

If you're one of those people that stopped watching after X and Y it's not doing what that show did, it's mostly focused on day to day adventures and its more capturing the magic of the early seasons.
Also it has some amazing bits of sakuga

Reception is mixed

The character writing and development isn't nearly as strong as the original, but there's a lot more action and every 3-5 episodes there's a amazingly well animated sakuga sequence

OS > DP > AG > SM > XY > BW

-- OS is the root, if it wasn't a success than the other series wouldn't have been made.
-- DP was the natural progression of OS
-- AG had good pacing and actual development
-- SM had Ash win the League
-- XY only has the edge in animation quality and sakuga
-- BW was the worst

This is my chart and objective reasoning behind them.

I don't play the games or care about the overworld encounters, but I do wonder would there have been better cut scenes if trainer customization didn't exist. Perhaps there might've been vibrant, dynamic, sakuga anime cutscenes if developers didn't have to worry about designing unique models to go with each one. Curiouser and curiouser.
