He's the world champ, and you'd would expect him to be competent with ANY pokemon. To blame Corphish would also mean that Ash cannot beat Misty through superior battle strategies or coordination with his mons. He cannot defeat her on an equal level. He has to resort to brute force which is not a good look for the no.1 battler.
Then again, Ash is a shitter without his plot armor. Look at damn near all of his PWC matches. They are all the same.
