They attract enough of a group of regulars that a hivemind forms, and since it's composed of otherwise entirely ineffectual and frustrated betas, that hivemind expresses itself through collective hatred. By hating whatever it is that the collective is deemed to hate, the ineffectual, frustrated beta can simultaneously feel himself to be a part of a viable peer group AND at least prop up his tattered ego a bit, by pretending that his hatred of a thing makes him innately superior to those others (whoever and wherever they might be) who are so "pleb" as to not hate it, or, worse yet, actually like it.
