Totodile, most definitely.
I imagine he'd be a bit unruly at first like Pikachu was, and that one day he'd bite me, and I, finally having enough of his goofing off and disobedience, would bite the little fucker right back, at which point he'd start respecting me and we'd become instant bros.
Eventually he'd evolve into a Feraligatr, at which point I'd say "Now, you're carrying me to the next town!" or "I'm sitting on your back now!", and he'd happily oblige, because he remembered all the times I lugged him around as a Totodile/Croconaw.
