Here's something I found from the last time this was brought up:

"In most Pokemon media, May and Brendan are often depicted with Torchic and Mudkip respectively.

This can be seen throughout the different continuities such as the Anime, PokeSpe, and More.

In the games, notice how you can only have the May/Torchic and Brendan/Mudkip combination if you were playing as May.

Lastly, to those saying that May looks like Birch, while Brendan looks like Norman, consider that May looks like Caroline (the RSE Mom) within the games."

It's pretty convincing to me imo.

It's completely up to you what the "canon" of the game is.

I was referring whether if any different Pokemon manga had May with Mudkip, but this is rather interesting!

The picture on the left shows May as the protagonist with Torchic. Sugimori must have wanted it to be ambiguous.
