A design means nothing without the stats. Otherwise, no one will use it and appreciate it. Mawile and Heatmor suffer from this.

Okay listen you don't seem to know what "design" means so I'm going to give you the opportunity to address that without laying into you.

Because if you mean aesthetics, that's a big one. Separate from that is the fact that each and every Pokémon has been designed for a function. Some have been designed as auxiliary to another Pokémon.

Having said that, aesthetics, but stats certainly help.

I actually like Keldeo the best out of the Musketeers. I think the hat thing and main are a pretty neat design choice, as well as shooting water from its hooves referencing the myth of Kelpie walking on water.

That didn't make it good with 75 base HP and fuckall for offenses.
It's a wall that sacrifices defenses for some decent attacking power, but isn't powerful enough to actually attack. So it's just a gimped wall of the worst variety. Look at Shuckle, compare it to Blissey and Chansey.

And the fact that you don't mention anything outstanding about Mesprit just feels like there's nothing to mention about it. So 2/3 of a trio having shitty stats means yes, the trio has shitty stats. Azelf is just an outlier.

It may not be caterpie bad, but if you're not outstanding, or even decent to some degree, you're gonna be a mediocre pokemon lost in a sea of 649.
Especially for a legendary, who's entire reason for existing is to be outstanding from the rest of the Pokemon.

Mesprit may not be a terrible Pokemon like Mawile, but it's not really considered a good Pokemon.

Not knocking the theme, it was actually pretty clever, but I just HATE the way all three of them look and Terrakion, Virizion and Keldeo are on every other team in their respective tiers. They're ugly, they're overpowered, they're everywhere and I hate them.

This, it's stats are too balanced to fill any one role exceptionally well. Pure psychic typing is also not the best.

Registeel filled the same role in the Regi trio, but he had the best typing and his stats being balanced actually helped more than it hindered. He can still be physically or specially defensive and has loads of useful resistances.

Base stats are more important. Could have all the moves in the world but the Pokemon is still going to suck if it doesn't have the stats to use them. Conversely, a Pokemon with great stats but a limited move pool is going to fare better just because it has better stats, it'll still do at least one job very well.

Good design with usable stats, or bad design with interesting usage.

Won't use pokemon with horrible design because of how strong they are, or pokemon with horrible stats just because they look cool.

So I will use Sawsbuck which looks nice, but isn't amazing, and Bibarel which looks stupid, but Simple is a really fun ability, but I won't use Alomomola which looks stupid, and is very strong, or Farfetch'd which looks cool, but is shit.

Stats are just numbers, if you want a pokemon to be good stat-wise you just put high numbers and that's it.
If you want a pokemon to be good design-wise, you have to be creative.

I guess design, by a bit, since I'm more likely to use a pokemon with a good design and crap stats than one with a crap design and good stats, but I don't really focus on either one. And I always pay attention to stats, whether they're good or bad, just so that I can make the best possible use of a pokemon. Even beyond the practical aspects of it, I think it's the right thing to do by the pokemon. Even from a pure "Karenfag" perspective, it'd be cruel to try to get a pokemon to do something that it's just not suited to do. I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to be an Aggron with nothing but special moves facing down a fighting type because my trainer thinks stats are boring.
