OP here, and I've gotta give it to Hoenn.

Gen III isn't my favorite, but when it comes to the starters, I thought their designs were interesting, and not too complex.

There's a flaw here and there with Hoenn's starters, but for the most part, I was rather satisfied with my selection at the time.

Kanto: I don't like Charizard (lol discreet boulders)
Johto: Not a fan of Typhlosion
Hoenn: Fuck Blaziken, I love Swampert
Sinnoh: I like all of them, Empoleon is a bro, obviously, and Infernape is tied with Swampert for overall favourite starter of all time.
Unova: All of them are derps.

Overall, Sinnoh is best with interesting starters overall, with good design and great utility in-game (Infernape was OU when it was released and even Empoleon saw some OU use, so even good competitive utility on those).

As a whole set, I'll say G4. Can't go wrong choosing one of those. Then G3. G1 gives Charizard as bad and Blastoise as medium, G2 has Meganium, and G5... All of them. My favourite mon is Infernape, so I'm a bit biased. Second favourite starter is Feraligatr. Glad it got a boost in movepool in HG/SS.

Design: Gen 5 starters had the most personality in my opinion and I liked the theme of their designs (Royalty, Wrestler, Samurai)

Competitively: Gen 3, Gen 4's are good but torterra brings it down. All Gen3 starters are good at something (sweeping, sweeping, tanking)

It is decent with an Unburden set, but it's not really tht great

Serperior outclasses him as Subseeder, but Scpetile is still a better Special Sweeper, because Contrary is not a thing yet

Scepetile is decent by no means the best at Subseeding

Whimsicott is faster because Prankster
Serpeior has bigger defenses and a better supporting movepool
But he's great as a late game sweeper

Sinnoh. In most generations I can pick out a clear favorite (aside from gen V where I dislike all the starters) but I just think all gen IV starters have fantastic designs and are very useful ingame. All three are total bro tier. My favorite single starter will always be Bulbasaur though. I just love it and all its evolutions.

Empoleon was pretty good, though.
But seriously, apart from Gen1 all the other Gens had mostly retarded starters. And that is not even an opinion, but a fact.

Design wise
Gen II > Gen I > Gen IV > Gen III > Gen V

Usefulness
Gen IV > Gen III > Gen II > Gen I > Gen V

I really hate the Gen V starters. There's so many better pokemon in the wild I usually always replace my starter by the 4th badge.

Not the greatest design, also has actual outside inspiration unlike generic Charmander line, and it is the only starter I consider to be too good. Makes the entire game a breeze if you pick it.

Sinnoh really is overall the best starters. Hoenn starters come in second until Gen 6 knocks them to third most likely. Kanto and Johto tied for fourth, and coming in last is the bridge brigade who have almost no redeeming qualities overall.

If that's what they were going for that's easily as underdesigned as Infernape is overdesigned. Neither of them are shining examples of design, and both of them are on fire. Infernape makes up for it by being really good though. Charizard was okay back in Gen 1, but his usefulness has dropped like a stone since.

Yeah, Charizard has never been EXCEPTIONALLY good. But at least he had his niche, then Gen IV happened. I honestly love Charizard and Infernape. They're the only fire starters I actually like.

While I have never had a pokeboner for Charizard, I have to state that Charizard was pretty decent until Gen IV. The rocks is what held it back around then, and today his stats are just... mediocre, compared to Powercreep Mons of Gen V. But it was good in Gen 2 and Gen 3, not the best then either though. Moltres > Charizard 4evr
