HG/SS are the best Pokemon games. It had following Pokemon, nice touchscreen controls, fixed Kanto and Pokeathlon. It's certainly better than Platinum which had a shitty region full of caves.

It really was. It did everything a remake should do AND its better than any main series game before or since even baring the good things it carried over from the original GSC. It was really the love letter to older fans that we've all been waiting for. I was really disappointed when almost none of its innovations carried over into gen 5.

I finally played SS over the winter. I have a hard time thinking I'd want it as my main Gen 4 game. Following Pokemon is great but purely cosmetic, Johto has great cities but the region itself is too small, Kanto is still pretty dead, and getting around is kind of a pain in the ass even with Fly. Oh, and move tutors only taking BP? Come on.

Pokeathlon was hella fun, and I really enjoyed the Pokewalker. It might be that I wasn't playing it during Gen IV, but I just couldn't get as into it as I did Platinum.

No, the Safari Zone doesn't count. It's still a travesty that most of the new Pokemon cannot actually be found in Johto.

It was my girlfriend's first game.
Being marked a "hoennbabby" several times, I am glad this was her first, so she can expect much better games to come after it.
You see, she thought it was sub-par and is enjoying her White version at the moment, often commenting how much better gen V is compared to SS. Her next game will be W2, next gen will be III.

Meh. Gen V is better. And Sinnoh feels like an actual region, while neither Johto nor Kanto are strong or filled enough to stand on their own. Not to mention Kanto is pretty much just a shadow of FR/LG remake.

In both the case of the original GS (never had Crystal) and HG/SS once I've completed Kanto I really don't feel the need to keep playing.

Oh yes. They did so much when they remade HG and SS. I really did enjoy fighting level 16 Rattatas after the 7th badge. Or how everytime I walked out a door I was interupted by either the story or my shitty phone. Heck, Johto is such a good region, that you can even visit the equally as great region - Kanto. And I LOVE how the Johto gym leaders use KANTO pokemon. I mean come on! Morty and those Haunters. Shhh. Faulkner and his Pidgeotto!

In gen I that was defniitely the case, though Black and White at least attempted to extend on that premise. Regardless, it feels more about imagining yourself as the protagonist in the game and its fun to try and feel what you would feel if you were actually there

I do think Johto was an empty gen more or less and that I only played HGSS for nostalgia.But Sinnoh was so terrible that I don't even remember what I did when playing through it, and I own all three Sinnoh games. I even remember more about Hoenn than Sinnoh. That's just fucked up.

It's just a slow game, and people dislike that. As of me, I dislike Cyrus because he was simply... generic. He was that over-the-top idealist that finds no use of the current world and instead of changing it, he wants to remove it and replace it with something else. Kinda the same reason I don't like Van Grants from Tales of the Abyss, because the idea is just too... Garchomp. I mean, I'm pretty damn sure he'd fit in here on /vp/, because

D/P Sinnoh has shit all Pokemon but Platinum improved it in every aspect. HG/SS has a slightly better selection of Pokemon than D/P thanks to the safari zone but still not good enough. It's largely inferior to Platinum in that regard which fucking has Houndour and Sneasel before the E4, something HG/SS can't boast at all.

D/P was slow as shit but Platinum sped things up, HG/SS is built of Platinum's engine which means they have the same overall speed (HG/SS has better load times though).

Story and characters is largely subjective so meh.

Platinum is still pretty slow, although it was indeed better than D/P.

That it is. Magma/Aqua is much worse. Theri goal doesn't make any sense at all, and they don't understand what they do (unlike terrorists who know every bit of what they do). Plasma is.. meh. Liberating pokemon is a good idea, but stealing them during the events is weird. Rocket is... well, basically just gangsters. I kinda like that.

I really dig HG/SS, it's possibly one of my favorite games and I'll admit, nostalgia is part of the reason.

That being said, it did still retain some of the flaws from the first game i.e. horrible level scaling.

There are fucking wild pokes in the low to mid 20s range right before you face Clair with a level 41 Kingdra. Hell, even after you get the Kanto the only place you can actually level grind is Victory Road

However, they did at least fix some of the flaws from the original. The Kanto leaders are now have much higher leveled pokes as they should, some of the Johto pokes that were previously unavailable in Johto are now in the Safari Zone.

All in all, still one of my favorites, but there's no denying that it's a grindfest.
