Every starter type has some poke I really like. Blaziken and Charizard from fire, Empoleon, Feraligatr and Swampert from water and Torterra from grass. Those are my ultimate favorite starters. But I guess I will say fire, because like the first poster said, they're good offensively and they're pretty rare in wild. Of course there are exceptions, like Chandelure.

I usually go grass, even if they're outclassed early on.

However, I might end up breaking this chain with X/Y. Its design really hasn't grown on me. Will probably go with Froakie if the evos don't win me over.

I have a strange affection for the grass types, but I don't always pick them because GF tends to make them bad. I also like the water starters, I've used them all and liked them all. Fire is meh, I like Blaziken and Infernape only.
And I've made my mind and on gen VI will choose Chespin, doesn't matter how bad GF makes it.

My like of the starters is pretty evenly distributed, but I guess my overall favorite starter type would be either Fire or Water. The Fire types tend to rank higher in my favorites, but I've yet to skip any Water starters.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same one, but there is one that allows the PC to not use Pokemon, but instead level themselves up and fight. It's a headache and a half trying to keep up with all the players and their Pokemon and how everything is supposed to interact.

No starter type is the best. The best way to use them is for your preference as a trainer. Do you like Defense or Offense? Would you prefer to slowly burn your enemies or bide your time building up Attack?

As a kid I loved Water types and always choose Squirtle. He was cute and I later used his Defense to my advantage.
I tried choosing Charmander and Bulbasaur too, and I liked them, just not a much.
Sticking to one type just isn't my thing. With each game, I choose a different starter. I think they're all cute. All of them.

Defence is irrelevant in Pokemon.

The best teams are filled with Fire type sweepers. This is objective fact. A belly drummed Charizard can one shot anything in the game.

I personally don't like "ruining" starters with HM move, so I'm reluctant to pick water starters as having 2 water-types (starter + Surf/Waterfall/Dive/Whirlpool slave) would be sort of redundant.

I generally choose the fire starter because of the lack of decent catchable fire types in-game. with the exception of Gen V. think about it. Shit tons of random water types you can catch via surfing or fishing, a few decent grass types here and there, and maybe two other fire types per gen, expect for Gen V

I would have to say Fire, because Fire type attacks are always useful to have in a team, Fire type has the best starters, and Fire is generally regarded as the best offensive type in a game where defence isn't really an option.

Fire is also likely to be the most popular typing, with some of the most memorable Pokemon. I would also consider Dragon or Dark to be the second and third best types after Fire.

There is no best starter type.

There are at least 151 pokemon available in each game. You can't have more than 6 on a team at a time. That means that at any given time, you're going to be using just a tiny fraction of the available pokemon, and that can be any assortment of types. The best types to have on your team are whatever works well with each other, and if that includes a starter, that starter type is what's best for that specific team. And that's the extent of it.

Grass = (usually) Defense/Speed
Fire = Attack/Sp Attack
Water = HP/Sp Defense

But i've normally gone with water types
