I found my Lucario when she was nothing but a Riolu at Floccesy Ranch. She was surprisingly docile, and actually followed me home like a lost Lillipup. We've been inseparable ever since.

Do family pets count? We've had a Liepard since I was a kid. Mom let me borrow her to catch my first real team member - a Mareep, also at Floccesy Ranch, like the person above. Send Claw back home (...my brother named her, he was about six at the time) and set off with Felicity (my Mareep), so I guess she was my 'real' starter.

When i was young we were too poor and my parents couldn't afford to buy me a pokemon, so they took me to a rescue shelter to adopt one of the abandoned or injured pokemon to make it a family pet.

There was a litter of growlithe pups who were not good material for police work and had been dismissed as potential pets, i adoped one and even when everyone kept telling me it didn't had the strenght or the courage to be great i knew we would be partners forever.

Really, I'm surprised it worked. We just took my dad's old rod and a handfull of bait that they always seemed to use in those old fishing magazines.
I'm not going to say that it worked like magic. Actually, we sat there and talked about stuff for an hour or two until I finally felt something yank on the line.
That's about how I caught my ol buddy krabby. It's been a long time since then now, and I'm afraid I lost contact with my friend after he beat the local gym. I guess he moved, sure wish he'd write or something though.

Let's see...

When I was... 6, I think, I came across an injured Galvantula trying to fend off a flock of Unfezant and Tranquill. At first, I stood back and watched, writing down any observation I could gain from the fight (back then, I wanted to be a researcher). Then, I noticed what she was defending so ferociously: She was crouched over a clutch of yellow and blue eggs. I couldn't stand the thought that she might be killed for defending her young, so I stepped in and started throwing rocks and sticks at the birds.

Please note, anyone that thinks this was brave: That was the single dumbest thing I have ever done. You see, the Tranquill stopped attacking, just as I had intended. The part that I HADN'T intended was for them to start attacking me. Imagine an 6-year old getting the ever-loving shit beaten out of him by 10 or so Tranquill. Yeah.

After getting my ass handed to me and being unable to HIT any of the Tranquill for a solid 10 or so minutes, an Electroweb caught some of them and managed to scare the others off. I looked over to see the Galvantula bleeding and obviously tired, but I saw no sign of the Unfezant near her or the eggs. Or should I say 'egg.' Apparently, the Unfezant had managed to knock her off or something and had left her with a single egg out of her clutch. Without thinking of myself, I hobbled over to her to check on her. You know how I said last thread that you shouldn't mess with a Pokemon with eggs? This is how I learned: She shocked the hell out of me. Getting the message, I hobbled back into town, using a fallen branch as a walking stick. That little stunt landed me a two-week long hospital stay.

As they cornered me, this big smilely face with gleaming eyes appeared in front of them and scared them off. Once they were gone,this Sableye popped up and started laughing at what he had done, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't smiling a bit as well, after that we became the best of friends, I gave him a home and he'd have my back by pulling tricks and pranks on bullies whenever they messed with me. when I was finally old enough, I caught him.

My first Pokemon was my best friend Magikarp, whom I'm named Caligula. It was a really expensive gift from my dad, because it was shiny you see. He didn't intend for me to raise it though, he only showed it to me in the tank so I could see how rare my birthday dinner was going to be, but I got a Pokeball from my cousin and captured it, much to my dad's despair.

I got made fun of at school all the time of course. Caligula would lose what seemed like every battle, but me and him never stopped trying.

I apparently didn't learn. I kept going back to where the fight happened and tried taking care of the Galvantula and her newly-hatched Joltik. As years passed... So did the mother Galvantula. By that time, the Joltik had evolved and was warming up to me. When she had her own clutch of eggs, she actually let me get near them and, holy shit, touch them. I tended to her eggs with the help of the local Nurse Joy, who I managed to convince to the Galvantula that she wasn't hurting the eggs.

A couple weeks after Nurse Joy started looking in on them with me, the eggs hatched. One of them took a shine to me and pounced on my head, keen on staying there, as it held on when I tried to remove it. The Galvantula managed to get him off and brought her babies back to the web she had made. A month later, when I was checking in on them, the mother gently nudged the Joltik that had latched onto me towards me. His eyes widened, he turned around and rubbed against her mandibles, then ran over, crawled up my leg and perched himself on my head. I looked at the mother in shock, no pun intended, and she gathered up the rest of her babies and left, just like that.

That little Joltik has since become my Galvantula, Tesla, and one of my strongest Pokemon.

Bulbasaur would always sneak into my yard and snack on the grass clippings from the compost heap when I would mow the lawn. He was reluctant to let me go near him at first. After a few summer weeks, he let me get close enough to make physical contact. I checked his OT with my Dex and it said he was owned by a trainer named Diego. This was 6 years ago. A few months after that, I ended up meeting Diego in a local tournament. He abandoned bulbasaur because he was "a measley weakling". He ended up advancing to later rounds after i was out. A year after that, Venusaur and I found ourselves matched up againts Diego in the semi-finals of the regional tournament. Venusaur and I took down his Sceptile in the final round. Haven't seen him since then.

I met My Lilligant when she was a Petilil. She was being attacked by some Whirlipede, I made the worst decision in intervening, I NEARLY DIED!

Lucky enough the Petilil called over her friends and family to treat my wounds and heal my poisoning.

It was painful to breathe and and I couldn't move.

When I finally recovered, I thanked them for the treatment and I was on my way, buuuuuut "Fuck my life" I was lost in the forest.
Petilil, has apparently been following me ever since I left.

I owe her alot for saving my sorry ass twice.

When I reached the forest's entrance I thanked Petilil again and went about my way back home but Petilil refused to leave my side.

I tried to ignore her but when I felt sorry for her, I took her in.

We've been together for a long time.

I've yet to repay to her that big one that I owe her.

When I was in High-school she would continuously try to follow me but everytime she tried a direct follow I'd tell her not to but, there were some times that she would sneak into my bag and pop out during the most inappropriate times.

Try to talk to the girl you like without a little female
Pokemon popping out of your bag and ruining your courage.

Well actually, I suppose that Bulbasaur was not really my starter. Sozin, now an Infernape, had been with me for a year or so at the time I met Bulbasaur. But he was so lazy as a chimchar with me. And I was fine with that, I loved him anyway. But when Bulbasaur came into the picture, he got alot more motivated to get up and around with me. We've trained so much together since then, sparring and battling with my other pokemon. But bulbsaur really started me as a trainer, the way i see it. So I love Bulbasaur, not only as my bro but because he brought Sozin and I closer together. And I named Sozin after Sozin's comet, shortly after he evolved into Monferno an began shooting around through the air for short distances coated in flames. That's how i taught him Flare Blitz.

I work in a Pokemon Center, and I've seen some with slight variations. Usually nothing drastic - some variation in eye color (dark brown instead of light brown, for instance), some differences in fur.

Some, incidentally, do have patches of different-colored fur due to scars beneath the fur, some with scales that grew back a different color, differences resulting from injuries. But that's not really akin to shinies...

So one day the power goes out on my house and I try to go find what's wrong. Imagine my surprise when I find a clump of bolts and magnets draining the power cables dry.

With some help from the daycare man who lived some time away, I managed to get the little guy off the grid and on a ball, and we've been inseparable since.

I just wish he wouldn't clamp onto my power tools when I'm using them.

Nothing exact - Vulpix are pretty uncommon. I have seen different-colored eyes. Nothing that drastic, but it's not really outside of the realms of possibility.

One time she decided to pop out during class and she got me in trouble because she distracted the class as well as pokemon weren't allowed in this school in particular.

Although I know she didn't mean harm, one time she decides to appear during gym class and made one of the jocks tripped on her.

She wasn't gravely injured but I got my ass handed to me pretty horribly, and I got mad at her, and I mean PISSED.

I ended up making her cry.

I truly felt sorry for her, so I wanted to get her a little something.

She left back to my house, but before I went back home, I went to one of the Shop tents in the City Square.

I ask the kind merchant lady at the shop that I wanted to make my little girl happy and she sold me a little necklace, she said that she would love it.

I went back home and apologized to her and told her that I got her a little gift.

She opened the gift box and was full of joy.
I went on with the apologies and I gave her a little forehead kiss and put the necklace on her and to my shock she evolved!

She's been very attached to me ever since.
During my graduation, she was present In an adorable little dress that my mother got for her.

She doesn't like being dressed unless it's for a special occasion, birthday, parent's anniversary, etc.

We never really battled before mainly because we don't like getting into any trouble.

There have been times when she would sneak into my bedroom and sleep in my bed, or when she would wake me up with a little smooch or a playful glomp.

I swear she almost gave me a heart attack once.

I recently moved into my own apartment and she tagged along with me.

We both share a bedroom but separate beds, I know it's unhealthy for a pokemon to love his/her trainer, of course she still sneaks onto my bed every once in a while.

She's really shy around other people and pokemon, but when she gets to know them a bit more she behaves normally.

I went on a trip when I was 7, and I wanted to try and catch a Pokémon while I was there. I was a bit nervous about going into the volcano when a Tepig came out, looked at me curiously, and walked right up to me. I didn't try to catch him then, since I wanted to make sure that the Pokémon I caught wanted to come with me; maybe he sensed my apprehension, because he seemed to try and get me to go into the cave with him. Through our exploration, I felt like I bonded with him; after we'd exited the cave, he still wanted to follow me, so I caught him then.

The region we went to was one where Poké Balls are somewhat frowned upon, but the locals don't seem to mind as long as Pokémon aren't kept in them. So, I kept Terry outside of his Poké Ball whenever possible; it's developed into a habit of tending to keep my whole team outside of their Balls.

So, the OP asked how we obtained our starters; but how did all of you meet the other members of your team?

Presea and Neith are the most recent editions, whom I caught at roughly the same time while I was on a class field trip to the Mistralton/Chargestone caves. Hraesvelgr I found injured in a clearing when I was about 17, and he joined my group after I nursed him back to health.\

Calvera I caught when I was 15, on a high school field trip to Castelia. He had just ruined a mayoral parade, and had evaded a good portion of pokemon control before I caught him. He's not as mischievous now, but I'm still required to check him in at the police office every time I go to Castelia.

My mother was working as a cage cashier at the Celadon Game Corner when I was little. On my tenth birthday, she brought home a Vulpix that had been given by a coworker that worked at the Prize Corner next door. I never truly went into any battles so I had other pokemon join me and Lilligant in my apartment.

I've a Pawniard, we met when we went to purchase some furniture.

It was wandering around the mall and tried to attack other people's pokemon.

Lilligant was no exception.

She tried being friendly but the little guy was rebellious, but then, I don't know how but it calmed down after a sweet smell wafted around us.
I treated it to ice cream and it became attached to us, most of all to Lilligant.

The kinds that had been bred for consumption not to be pets or battlers. However roaming packs of Houndoom and Houndour would come and attack our herds so he bought some battling Tauros, I was in charge of leading the herd and driving away the packs, he gave me the strongest one once decided to go out and travel, I've since retired the old boy though, He's just gotten too old and the Unova battling circuit is too intesne, I try to visit him when ever i go home to Jhoto

My Crobat just came flying through my bedroom window one day when she was a Zubat and couldn't figure out how to get out afterwards, so I kept her. I think I was 10 or so at the time.
My mom said she was lost because some other pokémon confused her. I didn't get it at the time, but I was happy to have found her.
She's a shiny, btw.

My second pokémon was a Larvesta my uncle got me as an egg during his trip to Unova. He didn't actually know what was in the egg, he just thought I'd like to have a rare pokémon from overseas.
I carry her around everywhere. Have my doubts if I actually want her to evolve.

I already had my Larvesta's egg by the time I got my Zubat, she just hatched later. So I'm not sure which one to consider my starter.

Well, after I got Felicity the Mareep, I decided to try out the gym circuit starting from Striaton (when it was still running, anyway - if you don't have Fire/Water/Grass, they put you up against whoever you'd have the least advantage to, so I fought Cilan). Between there and Castelia, I caught a Pidove and was lucky enough to actually find an Audino - yes, I know they're common as all get out from breeders, but that still doesn't make them common in the wild! When I was going through the forest, I kept hearing rustling sounds behind me - turned out it was a (very young, unfortunately!) Petilil who kind of... adopted me. And in the desert, I found a Darumaka, but was utterly unlucky and couldn't find a single Ground-type.

Got my ass handed to me by Elesa's gym, decided that training clearly wasn't for me, and, well, went home again, actually. Which ended up being a good thing - I suit research much better than battling.

Of those five Pokemon, three are still with me on a regular basis - Darumaka is incredibly competitive and really did want to fight, so I gave him to a friend who was about to start taking the gyms on himself. And the Pidove hated being cooped up in an apartment, so after evolving, she ended up being semi-wild - she lives outside, flies whenever she wants, and occasionally comes back for visits and treats.

Happy (the Audino) is extremely chill and easy-going and enjoys just hanging out with me while I'm studying, he's got this armchair he's kind of commandeered as his own. Joy evolved into a Lilligant after I FINALLY found an affordable Sun Stone - she's happiest in the garden, and has actually taken to gardening. I'm thinking of enrolling her in dancing classes aimed at Pokemon, too. She's really good! And finally, Felicity is now an Ampharos. She's pretty active and enjoys having little mock-battles when the neighbour's Pokemon - it's good for them, keeps them fit and active and works well as training.

So, they're my Pokemon!

My i moved around a lot as a kid and after I made a massive move to some hick town. My parents got me a Poochyena to brighten my spirits and he became my bro for ever. We train together, we play together, we sleep together (no we dont fuck), and we chill together. He evolved into the fatest motherfucking Mightyena I have ever seen and we wreck shit together. On my 10th birthday, my dad and I went out after dinner to catch my first Pokemon. Of course, "after dinner" in late November where I live means it's already pitch black at 5 o'clock and it's freezing cold outside. I remember bundling up as much as possible to stay warm, because it must have been -20c/-4f that night.

We left the house and headed towards the woodlot nearby. Normally, it would have only take three or four minutes to get there, but it had been snowing all day and trudging through the snow slowed us down quite a bit. Once we made it there, I began to survey the area, looking for a Pokemon that caught my interest. After about 15 minutes of searching, I found a Sneasel trying to climb up a tree. I say "trying" because the bark of the tree it was climbing was old and dead, and started to fall apart as the Sneasel tried to punch its claws into it.

Anyways. the tree bark gave out and the Sneasel fell about 10 feet straight down out of the tree. The snow broke its fall and it wasn't hurt, but it seemed dazed from the drop, which gave my dad's Magneton ample time to paralyze it with Thunder Wave and weaken it for capture.

It's been many years since then, but we're still happily together. She even evolved into a Weavile a few years ago! We've traveled all over the place and can't wait to get back out on the open road.

I found him as a Spheal, a drift on a platform of ice from the mainland, I originally intended to capture it after pursuing it, local Wailmers were crashing water against the ice, it went a drift and started moving the poor guy away, I couldn't jump in, I'd freeze myself, and they aren't exactly capable of grabbing my hand or anything, so I started to throw Pokeballs at him, he'd wave them away a good three of four times, when the fog started to separate the mainland and me from his vision, I threw a few encouraging words to it, captured it right there and then. Let him out right after, funnily enough he showed his appreciation and started rolling in joy, had him as my trump card since.

The oldest is Jessie- A female Houndoom who I've had for... Fourteen years now? Raised her as a family pet since she was six months old. Most people think their pokemon are loyal? They ain't got nothing compared to her. Her legs are starting to give out on her though- it's getting to the point where she can't travel easily.

Next is Wagner- Male Luxray I adopted from the local vet about four years ago. They found him when he was a Shinx- he was crawling through their parking lot with a broken leg. I met him when I was in getting Jessie her yearly check-up. Hit it off like sunny day and solar beam. Just evolved a few weeks ago. He also has NO concept of personal space.

Last up is Samantha- Female Zangoose I caught about two and a half years ago. She's also the only pokemon I've ever caught. Found her going through my camping supplies one night and, being the "genius" that I am, tried to scare her away by myself. Yes, I've still got the scars. Only reason I caught her is an ultraball fell of my belt and clipped her by accident. Makes a show of hating my guts, but has refused every offer to release her and cuddles up on my bed/next to my sleeping bag every chance she gets. Also sheds fur CONSTANTLY. As in, I could probably re-knit my entire wardrobe in a month. Twice.

Well like every little kid that wanted a pokemon of his or her own, I also wanted to have one. My two parents were pokemon breeders that worked with the local shelter and the professors of our town. They traveled a lot so I didn't have a permanent home. Well one day to I guess teach me responsibility and how to care for something they came home with an egg. It was halfway blue with red spots on it and the underside was a light yellow. They told me I had to take care of it and treat it as if it was my own baby and to promise to take it in no matter what. Of course I was a little girl so I immediately had tea parties and dressed it up. But every night I would fall asleep with it and whisper how much I couldn't wait for it to hatch and how much I loved it. I didn’t know what pokemon would hatch but I was hoping it’d be adorably cute. Every day I would tend to it, cleaning it, keeping it warm, taking it everywhere with me. It seemed like forever! As a 7-year-old child you start to get impatient and I thought maybe the pokemon hated me so I hated it back. I started to get upset and told my parents to take it back but they assured me that It takes time and I promised I would take it in no matter what. My parents weren’t going to let me off that easy and I’m actually glad they didn’t.

So fast-forward to the day it hatched, I freaked out. I thought I had broken it in some way due to it had fallen from the couch to the floor and my immediate thought was the pokemon had died. I immediately threw myself to the floor crying and sobbing because I was just so heart broken to think I broke it. All my dreams shattered right there and then. I didn’t notice the baby cyndaquil crawling out of the broken egg and crawling for the nearest warm body. I sobbed as my parents just watch with smiles on their faces and I thought they were just rubbing it in. Cyndaquil finally reached me and nudged my side trying to bury itself in my warmth. I looked with tear-filled eyes to see the baby cyndaquil curled up next to me. My eyes widened and I quickly rubbed my eyes clear to see if it was really true. The Cyndaquil let out a little yawn and fell back asleep not knowing what was happening around it.

“Congratulations~ Looks like a healthy boy. This is your cyndaquil,” my father whispered.
“Take care of it, because this will be your partner from now,” my mom continued.

More tears spilled from my eyes and I felt such joy to see this cute little adorable baby next to me. I curled my body around it, wrapping it in my embrace and cried into its back happily.

I had a vulpix who I had evolved to a Ninetales. She ended up being a big jerk who saw me as a lesser individual. I had to release her because she honestly didn't want to be in my company anymore and didn't like to work well with my team. But when she was a Vulpix she was still kind of jerky but sweeter than her older self. Very independent too~

Some pokemon just don't like being caught. Usually they are cool with it but some just really hate the training lifestyle and going with other's directions and going place.

Kinda how most of us like to go on adventures and travel the world but some people just like staying at home and being by themselves.

So, I have a bit of a problem. My Doduo just recently evolved and he seems a bit...out of synch. As a Doduo his two heads were perfectly in synch, always seeming to be working in perfect harmony, but now as a Dodrio the three of them won't stop squabbling. Thats actually really normal, Dodrios tend to be more agressive along with being more powerful. The heads are fighting with each other but it's almost never in harmful way. Despite each head had their own personality they still work as one pokemon so they know instinctively that they can't properly without all the heads, it's like siblings fighting really. Though it's still just one pokemon but it's different than a pokemon like hydreigon or girafarig since each head is equally developed and there's no 'dominate' brain.

As i grew older, Rocky stayed by my side, he was my friend, but of course, teenagerhood came around and i'd leave him at home in order to hang out with my highschool friends, or go on dates, etc.
Still a good friend, he'd greet me when i came home all wasted, help me keep my head out of the toilet, and even lay with me on the floor on those really bad nights.

One day he happened to be with me while i went on a beer run. I really shouldn't have been driving. the car flipped at high speed and caught on fire. I was thrown from the wreck, and broke my arm and a few ribs. Rocky never made it out.

i'll never forget the sound of him screaming as the fire burned him alive.

I figured, she mostly thought of herself the most intelligent seeing as ninetales are. I guess I wasn't on the same set of playing field so she disregarded me as a trainer. I know it isn't bad, I respected her decision and let her free like she wanted. I wasn't going to be the trainer that would keep her confined and not respect her and just do what I want.
I just hope she's ok, I know she didn't think highly of me but I did love her a ton.
In fact I was in this thread 3 weeks ago talking about this decision when I was staying in Goldenrod. It's why I haven't been on either, been a little depressed seeing her gone.
But that's life and the trainer life..

Seriously, dragon types are NOT easy to catch. Don't even try it if you don't have the discipline to take care of one. My Druddigon was a fairly old alpha male (I'd say middle aged in Druddigon years) when I caught him, and at first, he'd try to kill me every chance he got. Guess what? He STILL hates me. It's just that after leaving him with a dragon tamer for a while, he's calmed down enough to not try and kill me. Doesn't mean he'll listen to me or that he'll choose eating Pokemon food over hunting at night with my Weavile, since they're both too proud to accept handouts. It just means that he's not trying to kill me.

I've had my Eevee Arnold since I was twelve, he was a present from my Dad and I hatched him myself. In my opinion it's better to hatch a pokemon yourself rather than capture them because they take on your traits and you're much closer to them as a result. Plus he's more my best friend than a battler...

It all depends on how you work with the pokemon. Hatching one doesn't mean you'll be closer to them, it just means you were around when they hatched.

I actually just remembered the first battle we had. It was us vs my mother and her Raichu, which she's had for about 20 years. They must've gotten rusty, cause we beat them. I remember my grandparents laughing their asses off.

Budew. It's very good for starting trainers. Starts weak but will stay with you till the end as its evolutions are very strong. Plus it has a buch of moves that are of great help in catching other team members. Also has some kind of advantage against 5 of the 8 gym leaders

So I'm having a problem
I have a Whimsicott and a Lilligant, and when they were just petilil and Cottonee, they got along great! They were my best double battlers, but once they evolves, they've grown apart and even go so far as to try and outdo one another while fighting together.
They've stop being synergistic and have started being competitive with one another.
Healthy competition is fine, but this is getting out of hand, they won't even stay in the same room now.
Is there any way I can solve this problem?
I don't want to have two pokemon who hate each other, especially if they can be such good teammates when they act with synergy.

Me and Deino ment when I was about 10. I found him while playing outside on vacation in Opelucid City. See, my Haxorus is very fiery towards others of her gender, really just gets her veins popping just seeing anything that's another female.
And she of course hates losing, and losing to a female pokemon is just the ultimate insult to her.
So she was beaten fair and square by some ice pokemon (I can't even remember what it was) and Haxorus got really quiet, which is unlike her.
So I took her out of her ball once we exited the subway, so I could give her a potion or something, and she saw the same pokemon she lostto leaving the subway car and she just went ballistic.
Officer Jenny assumed it was because I was hurting my Haxorus. I'd never lay a hand on Shrapnel.
She's just a sore loser, that's all.
