Pacing and UI thing are nitpicking, I know. But it wouldn't hurt (and it would be trivial work for gamefreak) to include options such as a quick touch-menu before every battle (that you could opt not to have with a checkbox under options menu), so you could choose what pokemon you would let loose first. That'd be useful for areas filled with trainers but would be best turned off when grinding or trying to capture something in wild areas. Nothing a couple of checkboxes or "on/off" switches in the options menu wouldn't solve.
Mechanics-wise I don't think I have enough knowledge to form a valid opinion. I don't play competitively so I don't know shit about skill and stats balance and also none of that EV, IV and other breeding mathematics. Looks complex but also rewarding, though.
And now I will talk about the creatures subjective aesthetics because I want to, fuck you. As someone who grew up to like the animalistic style of pokemon, I must say that there are some very off-putting ones here.. like that ice-cream thing, jesus christ.
But on the other side, and I was looking at a spritesheet containing every gen's pokemon ever, this gen is also a neat comeback to what I liked most about the series, it's pokemon are not over-complicated or lazy designs compared to some stuff I saw on gens 3 and 4. Sandile is way too awesome, the starters are neat as well (but I can't bring myself to like Snivy's evolutions). As a conclusion, I'd say that there are some stuff the series could do without (such as Klink. Was too weird and tryhard. Magneton was some retro sci-fi tech stuff but this one is just stupid), but I'm enjoying what I'm seeing.
Irony is that after looking up that spritesheet, Shinx (and it's evolutions) is my favorite pokemon now. Go figure. I even asked my friend to give me one.
