I always did that until the games started having online play. Don't really feel like giving my name out to a bunch of random people online. That said, naming the character after you gives some level of immersion for some people so they can pretend like they are the ones in the world training their own Pokemon.

I always name my characters after something I'm interested in at the time. Like directors from movies, playwrights, or characters. SoulSilver my character's name was Coenn, Diamond was Brecht, White was Fox, Black 2 was Oswin.
