Hum... the only real people who would get excited for Butterfree would be us older fans who watched the series from the beginning. I'm suspecting that they're testing how much of an impact we, the older fanbase, actually make: a test run.
If ratings for this arc are high, I think they'll get the message that the older generation are still there and, as a result, may start listening to our requests for a better anime. e.g. Ash winning/leaving, 'darker' plot, continuity, etc
