No genders confirmed for PMD 3D?

I bought the game but I'm kind of nervous to turn it on until I learn this. Is there still a female Pikachu on the main menu as a giant middle finger to players?

At the beginning of the game your character calls Munna a she so I'm pretty sure there are genders.

Apparently, there are no genders in the demo, and genders in the game unless you transfer a save from the demo, in which case it defaults to male for you and your partner.

I got the game earlier and I can confirm it does not allow you to choose gender. You and your partner are forced to be male.

Am I crazy for thinking the game seems harder but just less tedious? Enemies seem to both hit a ton harder and take hits a lot more easily than in the past games, while your team doesn't seem to be nearly as much of a powerhouse in either department.
