Why the fuck did they give you Lapras at Lv 15 in RBY? My whole team is 40, and I've never used Lapras once in any of my RBY playthroughs so I figured "Fuck it, add in some variety." But then I remembered why, fucking level 15.

Of course it can be done, just not in 45 minutes when all you have to fight are wild Pokemon that top out at level 30 and don't provide more than 500 or 600 experience points per kill (and you're realistically going to see the level 22-28 first-form Pokemon that only give 200-300 most of the time.)

You don't get him until Cinnabar, which you (presumably) don't visit until after Silph. And he starts at level 5.

And Larpas is still much better, the fact that it learns Thunderbolt and Thunder and gets STAB on Ice Beam/Blizzard automatically makes it better than ~80% of the other water-types in the game.

Kingler does indeed suck in R/B/Y, one of the worst water-types. High attack but nothing beyond normal moves to use it with and shit special and HP.

The Psychic ones were superior but then again Psychic was broken in RBY.

Gyarados is UU, Lapras is OU. Gyarados is pretty mediocre, the only thing it has going for it are high stats and a decent move pool, but it's high attack stat was squandered and it was FAR too easily KO'd by Thunderbolts. Lapras has comparable special, more bulk and STAB Blizzard. Confuse Ray was also a big advantage, as it could para-hax very well with Body Slam, one of the best abusers of that in the game.

Tentacruel wasn't terrible, but it just didn't get used much because it was weak to Earthquake AND Psychic, two of the most commonly used moves. That 120 base special stat was nice, but it still took hits worse than most other water-types just because of its weaknesses.

That's an understatement, Gyarados's secondary type basically did nothing but add weaknesses. Being immune to EQ was kind of helpful, but it wasn't weak to it and had good bulk already so it doesn't outweigh the 4X weakness to electricity, weakness to rock and neutrality to ice.

That right there proves why it wasn't as good as other water-types. Starmie, Lapras and Cloyster didn't always have to run from Alakazam, Slowbro, or Exeggutor. Even Blastoise or Dewgong could stay in.

Also, why has no one mentioned Cloyster yet? He was awesome too.

Gyarados had 100 special whereas Lapras had 95, so it didn't hit much harder at all, and Lapras's Ice STAB was very helpful.

Lapras also made better use of Body Slam, the go-to normal-type move, because it got Confuse Ray and was a great para-fusion abuser.

He's been UU in every single generation, but I guess I'm happy he didn't sink any lower. That at least means he's not terrible, just outclassed by a small handful of other water-types.

I'm hoping he gets Shell Smash or gets Curse again in Gen. VI. He's the ONLY water-type starter without any way to boost either of his offensive stats at all. He'd be a great Water Spout abuser if he could boost that 85 special attack or 78 speed without having to hold a choice item.

Except there is. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't real. Even not taking the metagame into account, Tentacruel is still worse than Lapras, Cloyster, Starmie or Slowbro.

And if we're going down that road, there's really no wrong choice for a water-type with which to go through the story as any of them are effective, so there's really nothing to discuss there either.
