She felt she needed to be superior to everyone else, so relying on the others (who obviously work with her, shinji, rei, misato) was out of the question. That's kinda what led to her downfall towards the last episodes as she went into a state of depression and couldn't even synch with her eva anymore. The sad truth about evangelion is that asuka is just a fucking loser. She has no family, has no friends, so desperate for human contact that she wanted to get close to shinji, who of course is a pathetic wimp, as he was the closest guy she knew.
