They aren't needed because the franchise isn't broken in the first place. The Pokémon games are simple and fun, but they can also be complex, and that's why so many people love it: because it fits all kinds of players.
I was not compplainig about the Mario franchise, I love it as well. Every Nintendo franchise has their own essence, what would be of them without it?
And even though Pokémon games are "the same thing over and over again", every new game adds new features, which makes the games interesting and always keeps the franchise fresh.
And in the end of all, it's Nintendo. They know what they're doing with our nostalgia.
