Maybe could work if the condition was that the pokemon will always use it at the end of the turn it's sent out, although the X items would still be very abusable.

What about endurance? Once per fight, if koed,revives with 10% hp.

You could have moves and abilities trigger from knockout pokemon.

Imagine an ability that gave it like 50% power, but fades once ANY pokemon have gained that fight.
