My first time ever Playing 4th Generation

What should I expect? What your favorite pick for first pokemon and why? Any tips in general?
What are the best pokemons from this generation?

Piplup is a very good water bro. Platinum in particular was more fun than DP. Everything feels a tad slower, not enough to get the reputation that it has earned. Story is awesome, and like I said, Empoleon will not fail you.
Aslo get Gible. You won't regret it.
AAaaand, once you beat E4, they get ridiculously tougher so don't depend on it for grinding post e4. Ev training is grand because of battle seeker, and you can get shinies with that grass shaker thing too. Gl, hf!

So far your team now must be
Piplup/Chimchar, Gible, Drifloon, Shinx, and Croagunk. Might I reccomend(if you have wifi) getting a spiritomb off the GTS?

Aww, that sucks. My only shiny besides events is a Starly. Really lame, caught it while mass-catching Bidoof and Starly as filler for My Pokémon Ranch.

Ran into a shiny Rhyhorn in the LeafGreen Safari Zone once, but unsurprisingly, it got away. Not a huge loss, I guess.

I'm glad that kind of thing happens just because despite the vast amounts of time soft-resetting shiny hunters waste trying to get that one shiny legend, someone else can just get it randomly with no extra effort.

Empoleon is a bro man, like I said earlier.
There's ponyta, magby, and Houndour. Your choice. Then again, you'll only really need it for like 2 gym leaders.
