What were they thinking? It was the first movie to buster the blocks and the story was about cloning ethics? As a 9-years old kid I didn't even fully understand the concept of cloning.
It felt like my first horror movie to be honest.

tl;dr: why did they think it was a good idea to make a kid's movie about cloning?

We've got these legendary Pokémon Mew and Mewtwo, a big deal in the games. One being the powerful reward for being the Champion the other being an event passed around the lucky few. Logically you make a movie about these Pokémon.

They were trying to stop all of us young pokemon playing folks from turning off the gameboy mid trade to clone pokemon, because they thought it was wrong.

Because it was made before any movie or tv show beyond hopscotch rainbows and educational adventures was considered too much for anyone under the age of 14.

I was in 6th grade when this movie came out, give or take. I was utterly fascinated by the idea of cloning and researched it extensively (for a 6th grader, at least.)

Year or so later, we start learning about genetics in school, shit was epic. I still have a very big interest in it.

Pokémon Red and Blue had an underlying theme of industrialization/science intruding on nature. That's why there's a fuckton of Poison Pokémon in Kanto, specifically artificial ones like Grimer, Muk, Koffing, Weezing, and others.

One of the freak-out "has science gone too far?!" moments in the 90's was the beginning of viable cloning. Remember Dolly? Remember how much that fucked with some peoples ethics? Gamefreak decided to include that when they came up with the concept of Mewtwo, the first cloned Pokémon.

Since Ash is based on Satoshi Tajiri as a kid, that might also be why, in the early episodes, he liked Bug-type Pokemon a lot more than, say, Misty did.

...Actually, I just realized something. Was the reason that bug is super effective to psychic, (which, I believe was basically the uber type during Gen 1,) because Satoshi Tajiri was obsessed with bugs as a kid, & he was basically saying, "Not even the extreme mightiness of Psychic Pokemon can beat the awesomness that are my wonderful bugs?!"

Also, it should probably be noted that they originally intended to have a Pokemon based on Dolly before they settled on Mewtwo, due to how controversial it would've been at the time.
