I played Red, then never played pokemon again because fuck it.
One day I saw SoulSilver and thought it would be fun to stroll down memory lane (since silver has Kanto in it) and bought it.
I adored the fuck out of it and am now playing Black 2. I think all the new mechanics and mons are great.
Nothing wrong with pokemon today. It's a bit broken in places, but it always has been. Getting the nostalgiafags on board is as simple as doing remakes.
There's a logic in place when a band cuts a demo that says "always do one cover, since it helps highlight what's unique about you specifically when you're applying it to something familiar". Same idea here. Take the new mons and mechanics and playstyle and stick it on a familiar locale or story to highlight the improvements that have been made.
Once the new mechanics feel comfortable and familiar, they'll be enough of an anchor to explore a new area and story.
