Granted, Explorers did that with the Darkrai arc, but I felt it's purpose was to tie up loose ends with the plot and deliver the most evil villain that the entire pokemon franchise has ever had with the darkest scene in the franchise - you and your partner seriously considering killing themselves. GTI's plot seemed to have way less loose ends by the time the credits rolled than Explorers, hence there was more material for the post story.
Implying that your partner dies? Having 'you bastard' at the end off the fade to black message would be fitting
