The reason is because he feels guilty over pressuring his younger sister into battling a pair of team plasma members with a newly captured purrloin. She lost. Team plasma took her pokémon from her. And they kicked his ass when he tried to step in to physically stop them.
The image implies that that liepard is his sister's purrloin after evolving, and he's sitting there, letting it kick his ass, trying to get it to remember who he is.
