Hoenn is the only region I actually can't remember all the Gym Leader's names in. They were just so bland. I do remember the Fighting Gym Leader had a really stupid name though like Wrecky or something.

The only reason people remember the Gen 1 leaders is because they were the first. The only one with any more personality than the Gen 3 ones in the original games was Giovanni.

All the games until gen IV had gym leaders with "no personality". Until gen V they didn't even do anything besides standing on a gym taking challenges.
It's simple - if you're interested in pokémon you obviously played the games. All of them, multiple times. How can you not know the names of the gym leaders?

I'll give you Blaine, and you already said Giovanni is fine. Really Blaine is the only one technically lacking, and even then he's quiz master or some shit like that and looks classy as fuck. So no, Gen 1 isn't as bland as Gen 3 in the Gym Leader department.

I don't see what's so appealing about any of these people outside of Surge being a foreigner. Until Platinum, Gym Leaders were just there to get their asses kicked after messing around with a puzzle.

Brock and Misty were famous from the show. If you say "show doesn't count" Brock was bland, but Misty was still the Tomboy Mermaid. Lt. Surge fought in a war and was a foreigner as you said. Erika's gym is the one full of pretty girls. Sabrina is the psychic with those crazy ass puzzle tiles. Koga is a fucking ninja. You really shouldn't forget Koga. Yes Gen IV added fluff to the gym leaders, but there's still a difference between a memorable concept and design and a bland as fuck one. Take Winona for example. She looks pretty cool, but I don't know two shits about her or get why they would call her Winona which seems to have nothing to do with her type/role. Meanwhile Norman is a great Gym Leader for being not only the player's dad but Normal Type gym leader. Get it NORMAn NORMAl? Gen 3 had afew decent gym leaders, but most were incredibly bland.

Except all the Gym Leaders I named actually did things that showed personality like Whitney being a sore loser who cries after you beat her. Hoenn leaders didn't do anything special. You just beat them and get your badge. The closest ones that do something are Normon who sends you away and Wattson sending you to that place.

Everybody except Giovanni got like, two sentences worth of "development". saying that Misty was somehow more distinct than Flannery because a sign says that is a "Tomboy Mermaid" is dumb.

The only reason why the Kanto Leaders are remembered for more often than later gym leaders is due to part of the franchise at its peak of popularity, when everyone and there grandma watched the anime which gave all of them better screentime.

Except no, the NPCs talked about Misty and she even had the scene at the cape in Gen 2 where she was on a date. She had personality if you bothered to look, whereas most Gen 3 Gym Leaders seemed to exist in a realm outside even the towns they resided in. NPCs never mention them.

Maybe that's my problem.

I replayed Red a buttload, but I don't see me replaying Black 2. Between PWT/Battle Subway and Black Tower/White Forest I've got more battle challenges than I can shake a stick at, and there's suddenly hundreds of pokemon to catch without trading (and trading with Wi-Fi which makes it actually feasible).

I'll probably get bored of the game long before I complete it, and if I don't, I'm sure that I can't complete it before X and Y come out... So why would I restart it and do it again?

Oh, that makes more sense.

Still... Gen V has the best story yet and it STILL doesn't really seem worth re-living. I could see replaying it just to challenge yourself again, but with the infinite postgame it seems like an odd choice, the postgame is a more fun challenge than the game itself (which IMO just feels like filler).
