well i know for fact that groudon, kyogre and rayquaza were inspired by the biblical behemoth, leviathan, and ziz.

IIRC leviathan was a sea serpent and Ziz was a large bird

So while "land giant, sea giant, sky giant" might come from those three, the designs don't AT ALL.
