Autism aside, there would probably be an unwritten standard for treating your Pokemon. Like if you start beating your Marill in the middle of the street people will stop you. Abandoning/releasing something is probably frowned upon, but not fobidden, as its still an option in the game and Paul does it to like three of his Pokemon.
It would be complex, just like a parent can spank their child but can't hit them with a pipe. If you don't do it in public people might not be able to stop you.
As for battling, there's probably unwritten rules and standards too. I like to think that its a Trainer's responsibility to look out for their own Pokemon in a battle, and they have to call it back or forfeit the battle if they think its going to be injured. Obviously some people will violate this law, but the point is they're -supposed- to follow the safety rules.
