I don't think pocket has anything to do with the size of the Pokemon themselves, considering you can't fit almost all of them in your pocket.

This is probably because they were huge at the time you first imagined them. You know, as a child. Imo many Pokemon are the height they are because they are tall enough to be the monsters you imagined as a kid, but not so tall as to eclipse the child when they imagine themselves riding on top of these behemoths, or whatever.

Noctowl, a fucking bird is 5 feet tall, even though a real horned owl is less than 2 feet. Or even stranger, Poliwag, a tadpole, is 2 feet tall, much larger than any tadpole.

Keep in mind, FWIW, that you're playing the game as a <5' 10-year-old. I'm pretty sure Ninendo's size reference uses someone who's like 4'10" for pokemon sizes.

So if you were ever to play pokemon in like, full-3D, all of the pokemon would look about 15% taller (since you'd probably visualize the trainer at 5'6"-6' depending on your personal height).

That usually helps a bit.

Electrode is still as tall as you, though, and Regigigas is only just over twice your height. It's preposterous.

This is actually pretty sensible though, remember you can fly around on their backs. It's far LESS sensible that pidgey is only about the size of a housecat.

I loved the Gen 4 Pokedex because for height and weight, there were comparisons of the Pokemon to your character. For height their silhouette was against yours, and for weight you character was placed on a scale that was weighed against the other. I thought this was neat because the Pokemon were dropped on the scale, and if they were really heavy, your character would be launched of the screen.

Err, I'm pretty sure the height goes from head to tail. Serperior would be absurdly tall if it didn't count the tail.

The anime follows the dimensions of Pokemon in the game, right? We could use that as reference.

Well the trainer should be about the size of Braviary then.

I'm pretty sure Braviary is right because my size reference for Braviary was the right shape (the Dex sprite is the same as Sugimori's artwork) but the Dex sprite for Pidgeot is the old RBY standing one, not the new flying one, so I had to eyeball it.

Maybe I was way off? I thought I did a decent job but you're right that's mad incorrect.

Haha no worries, man. It's a truly spectacular image, and I can tell you did a lot of work on it. I only noticed because Braviary is kind of my "signature mon" and when people started talking about bigass Pidgeot I took a look and noticed something was off.

So Braviary might just be too small.

Yeah, I think Braviary is a touch too small. His hunched, swooping posture and longish legs make it tough to judge, but in terms of body size he seems a little too dinky. Especially since Pidgeot and Pidgeotto do look properly sized compared to the trainer, like you said...

Making Brav a bit larger is probably easier anyway.

IDK, I knew there would be some mistakes because of how the old Dex system did its spriting; it used math to scale the image of the pokemon, which meant if the image was of a dynamic pokemon (Braviary's wings being stretched way up) it would make the mon too small since it would measure height bottom-of-the-sprite to top-of-the-sprite, at least in certain cases (I think exceptions were made for serpentine pokemon).

So I gotta fix that, too.

Anyone else notice any errors?

So, no, though he was kind of close.

He was another I had to eyeball. I've shrunk him down to make more sense with Pikachu (should be about double, Pikachu is leaning forward) and the trainer (should be about half, accounting for the stretched foot and the ears which are kind of unpredictable).

Fixed.

Lapras at 8 feet could indeed stand to be a LITTLE bigger, I blame the fact that his fins come "forward" from the baseline which makes his sprite taller than he looks.

Gyarados is probably about right, he's like 20 feet and the trainer is like 5 feet, given the back curve of his tail is "background" I'd say that he looks like he's about 18 feet or so right now. But I'll blow him up with Lapras right now for the sake of your childhood since it's pretty hard to gauge a length properly on a serpentine pokemon.

Last quip, on the subject of birds, dynamic poses, and sizing: Ho-oh looks not much bigger than Pidgeot/Braviary. He's smaller than Lugia, obviously (12 something vs 17, iirc), but it looks like he may be a touch small.

Looking over the rest everything looks peachy keen.

Well Lugia I believe, given the tail, is measured 17 feet LONG, not 17 feet TALL, so in terms of body size Lugia will be smaller than the number suggests.

That said, Ho-Oh should indeed be more than twice the size of the trainer, that needs fixing.

The sizes make slightly more sense when you look at it from the Japanese perspective. They are short as fuck so the Pokemon don't have to be as big.

Now that I think of it, I don't know how birds are measured in nature but I'm pretty sure it's wingspan.

Whatever, if we got giant birds we got giant birds. It's more or less a moot point with the 3D pokedex anyway, these days you could lay all the models out on a field using Official Nintendo Sizes.

Birds are usually measured by length and wingspan, but its clear that in Pokemon they are measured by bipedal height. Consider the case of Braviary, who is measured at 4'11''. Bald Eagles can have wingspans from 6-8' and are about 3' long.
Wouldn't make much sense for the badass fantasy eagle to be little more than half the size of the real deal. Taking that into account, Braviary probably has quite the impressive wingspan indeed (assuming similar proportions, around 13').

I think it's correct, or at least close enough that I won't fix it.

Staraptor is 3'11", the Reference Trainer is 4'10" or 4'11" (I can't remember which). Staraptor is a little over 75% of his height, and should be about 80%; accounting for Staraptor's somewhat bent posture (it's leaning forward a bit) and the trainer wearing a hat, I'd say that's within an inch or two of being correct.

Staraptor is a manlet bro, deal.

I'm pretty sure Furret is 6 feet LONG, which given his tail makes him about 3 feet TALL standing upright (his tail is like half his length).

It's tough to tell with pokemon like that but my guess is Furret is measuring length, not height.

These are canon heights from the in-game pokedex.

Bulbapedia will let you in on the details.

The anime/movies (a) include pokemon of varying sizes, (b) do intentionally "giant" pokemon more than once, and (c) are inconsistent and shit even during the course of the same episode, so can't be trusted anyway.
