If they don't expect it, they must expect levitate
Which means you'd get hit by a boosted fire type move thus nullifying heatproof in the process

Some guy on PS had a Heatproof Bronzong on a sun team.
He send it out against my Salamence after a few DDs.
Before this, I had KO his Ninetales with EQ.
I decided to use Fire Blast and noticed that it was weak...
One EQ later,Salamence swept his team.

The problem with these type of surprise strategies is they only work for a turn and then your purposely handicapped pokemon becomes a liability.
