Gen 5 was literally a whole new Gen with no past Pokemon, which, while misguided, is nothing other than an attempt to recapture the sense of wonder people missed and bitched about.
"Why are the only good Gen 4 Pokemon evolutions of old Pokemon" read as "stop making evolutions of old Pokemon" rather than "make better new Pokemon". Which is not what the fans wanted, obviously, but that doesn't mean it wasn't an attempt to pander.

I'd disagree that evos to some of those old pokemon was an attempt at capturing old fans. Tangela, Likitung, Chansey and co were never really popular. You guys still have a point.

no matter how you look at it, in aesthetic terms, the new pokemon or "newtwo" looks more worse than mewtwo.
