It's not ShinyGold's fault, GF actually tried to stop piracy in HG/SS, so it'll do that even on the bare game.
Patch it up, and it'll work fine. SG is made by the same guy as VoltWhite and BlazeBlack, so it's definitely quality.

Light Platinum had some potential, but it's painfully obvious that whoever made it got really lazy and started copy&pasting enemy teams. Static either has 75% chance or there's so many Shinx that chance has nothing to do with it. Still, I made it to the league(the first one, since I think there were actually multiple regions) but got stuck because for some reason grinding becomes worse than GSC. At least one Pokemon in the league gave out less than 100 exp.
Trying to put 4th and 5th gen Pokemon in a gen 3 rom is... Are there any games that do it properly? I haven't played too many romhacks to know.

I wouldn't know. I found the new pokemon, and after struggling to catch them due to unmodified catch rates, then seeing their non battle sprites and typing had not been changed, I got some rare candies to experiment. At level 18, my gay caterpillar turned into a cocoon that was steel type.
I quit playing when at level 36 he evolved into pidgeot.

What are some good GBA or pre GBA romhacks?
I liked Liquid Crystal (until it went full fanfic with countless self inserts) and YAFRH and Fire Red Omega were pretty good too. What else would you recommend?

Snakewood is so bad it's good.
Flora Sky is basically a Gen 5/Gen 4 mishmash on the Gen 3 engine.
Pokemon Orange/Naranja is the entire Orange Islands saga remade as a playable romhack. EVERYTHING's included. EVERYTHING.
CrystalDust is a Crystal remake on FireRed's engine and is basically better than ShinyGold in every way. Like Orange, and unlike ShinyGold, EVERYTHING is included.
