Since gen II the games were very meant to be played with other people.
Trade-exclusive evolutions, game-exclusive pokes, egg trading, MM-ing...
It got even worse in gen V with the possibility to battle people all over the world, adding key systems and pokemon like Boldore, Gurhurrdurr.
They WANT you to use these posibilities during gameplay, not make them just a late game feature.
This is not going to change, at least for handhelds.
