I got Pokemon Gold imported from America by my parents for Christmas before it came out in the U.K. (Honestly, probably my best Christmas present ever) - 'cos I really wanted Spinarak, I set the clock to nighttime straight away.

One of the first things I run into? A Shiny Hoothoot. Before getting any Pokeballs. As I used to be a bit obsessive about Pokemon, I already knew what, and how rare, shinies were. Raged like hell, before carrying on.

OP, I was in your exact situation just a few years ago.
Like, exact situation. Level 46 and everything, though I had been fighting mine with a larvitar I was training.
and I was successful in catching it

The first and only shiny I've ever seen in-game was a Croagunk in the Safari Zone.
Needless to say, the wild Croagunk ran.

Assuming Geodude didn't use Explosion ASAP, you would have a 78.462% of catching it at full health with a Ultra Ball. You get the same chances if you put it to sleep and used a Poke Ball.

Quick balled that fucker. Damn, is she beautiful.

I have encountered 3 shinies so far: Tentacool in Sapphire and Diamond and then this Boldore a few days ago.

I refuse to use repels at any time. Each of these shinys I found after I got so pissed off with wild encounters that I was close to reaching for a repel.

In 15 years, the only one I found was about 6 months ago when I was replaying Fire Red, I found a shiny Rhyhorn in the Safari Zone and caught it with the first ball I threw.
sadly it had fucking awful IVs and a Modest nature
