Were all pokemon rock type in the past? Or does the revival process make them rock type? I like to think that only the ancient pokemon who happened to be rock typed left fossils that were capable of being revived.

I think that they become rock type with the fossilization process. That's the only explanation for all fossils being rock types, even the ones that this doesn't make much sense, like Archeops.

Their secondary types?
Kabutops and Omastar would have been Water
Armaldo is Bug, Cradily is Grass
Bastiodon is Steel
Carracosta is also Water
For Rampardos whose pure Rock, and Archeops who would be pure flying, I think it would be reasonable to replace that type with Normal.

maybe some of them were (bastiodon). But it doesn't make any sense for all pokemon in one time period to have been part rock type. And we have proof that they weren't:

None of them are rock type. Because they weren't fossilised. Its more interesting this way because it shows that extreme environments can change a pokemon's type.

inb4 mammoths and dinosaurs weren't the same time period, you know what i mean

I think that the rock type is a side effect, but it's not unlikely that all the pokemon were originally rock, and it's that that made them leave the fossil dna. Think of it as all the squishy, non rock pokemon like mamoswine had their body tissue decompose.

Archeopteryx is one of the earliest known birds, it wasn't even a reptile. Archeops being a dragon makes as much sense as any other bird, like Fearow or Pidgeot, being a dragon, which of course makes no sense at all.

What's odd about them just being flying or rock? Archeops is an ancient ancestor of modern birds, and ancient Rampardos being rock-type still makes sense, it smashes into things with it's thick, rock-like skull.

No, birds actually are. The chicken is the Tyrannosaurus Rex's closest living relative. There's debate now as to whether or not dinosaurs were even cold-blooded, and a lot of them had feathers.

Most of them being rock-type still makes sense though. Kabutops has a thick, hard carapace, Omastar has his big shell and Rampardos and Bastidon both look like rock-types. The only ones I'd argue didn't need the rock typing would be Aerodactyl, Archeops, and maybe Cradily or Armaldo, could go either way with those two. Being rock-types also ties into the flavor of them being ancient, prehistoric Pokemon.

The revival process makes them into a part Rock type unless they were already part Rock.
If they weren't part Rock before, the process replaces one of their previous types with Rock.
ex. Armaldo is Rock/Bug, but was most likely Water/Bug originally.

Birds are closest of (usually) the bipedal ones, but crocodiles are only related to a specific branch of the quadrupeds. Then you have turtles, iguanas, monitors, etc

Shuckle is a fungi and, you know.

Remember that the japanese name of the type is mushi, which doesn't means literally insect, means any kind of tiny animal with a lot of legs.

Rock (killed by asteroids)
Ice (killed by ice age following asteroids, killed by comets, reptiles so cold blooded)
Fire (killed by volcanoes erupting after asteroids/comets hit)
Ground (killed by earthquakes after asteroids/comets hit)
Poison (killed by toxic gas from volcanoes)

I can't wait until X and Y perfects the fossilization process and you can change the forms of your fossil pokemon to their original typing.

Omastar - Water/Psychic

Kabutops - Water/Dark or Fighting (not bug kabuto is based on a horseshoe crab which while looking like a bug in not similar in the slightly)

Cradily - Grass/Psychic or Dark

Armaldo - Bug/Water

I don't really know what any others would be.

Fucking idiots. Did you know that hard-shelled creatures are always more likely to fossilise than soft, squishy organisms? Rock types would be much, much more so considering they're already made of rock. Therefore, of the amount of fossils commonly found in the Pokemon world, most of them would be Rock type. Fossils of other pokemon would still exist, but they'd be much more rare or too incomplete to revive.
