You can use the GTS to evolve Gurrdurs. You could also use Thro/Sawk.

Honestly, there's no point of playing HG or SS without choosing Cyndaquil and evolving it into the glorious Typhlosion.
Using any other starter is just not okay and it takes away from the game.

Are you ahvin a gigle m8, you can catch Darumuka pretty damn early. Sheer Force boosted Flare Blitz/Fire Punch is so much better than Blaze boosted Flame Wheel. Also Litwick exists.

Has there ever been any other entry where the universally considered 'official' starter was the same? I mean you look at any art about S/G and in every single one the main trainer is always using Typhlosion while his rival uses Fergilator. You ask anyone who has played S/G/SS/HG and almost everyone will say Typhlosion was the one they chose. I don't think there has ever been such a strong emphasis on one starter in any other entry except gen I and the universal affinity to Charizard from 10 year olds who started playing it.

Not that I mind, Typhlosion is so obviously the best

I only used Typhlosion as an 8 year old, because I thought fire types were the best.
But then again, I was a stupid kid. Growing up I realized most fire types are shitty, and Typhlosion is one of the worst. I ended up restarting Gold and choosing Feraligatr and caught a Growlithe. So much versatile, so much better.
