Heart Gold/Soul Silver have been my favourites so far, but Black/White have the best storyline. If you're looking for some nostalgia, I'd recommend Fire Red/Leaf Green followed by Heart Gold/Soul Silver. If you're looking for something new go with Black/White followed by Black 2/White 2.

When you've finished them, I'd recommend playing Emerald and Platinum as well.

Get Emerald or Platinum, they're the best games in the series by far.
B/W and B2/W2 aren't actually very good, no matter what anyone says.
It's all hand holding and the region is so linear, and neither of their stories are very good.
The only redeeming thing about the games is the top notch Pokémon designs.

If you're going to go full nostalgiafag, just get Gen I/II games. If you actually want to try something new, Platinum or Black/White. If you're in-between, HeartGold or SoulSilver.

Yeah, the only issue with Gen I/Gen II is no friends who play and still have their old games. So its just me without trading...sad. Though, I was thinking about buying Red (have blue, silver, gold) and then getting Pokemon Stadium 2 to trade with myself and maybe contact some friends for the nerdiest day of hanging out and Gameboy pokemon, but then i need to buy a new connector cable

When you reach Mauville for the first time, you have 3 ways

MUH CROSSROADS amirite?

However the right one is a dead end because lel surf, and the left one is only a shortcut to a older city that, guess what, was blocked by HMs before. So the only way to go is up, but of course the HM curse strikes again and you have to beat Wattson to go on.

The only time you get some liberty is when exploring the big ocean of emptiness and even then you have to beat the twins to get dive and actually do soemthign worthwhile

Platinum story is pretty much RSE story, but with a different less retarded team and a bucnh of even more OP legendaries

Speaking as someone who originally only played the first two gens, then came back to Pearl later, I have to say you really should give the new games a chance. You never know, they might grow on you.

Speaking of which, for that reason, I might recommend Gen 4 for someone who's returning to the series.

Heartgld and Soulsilver and BW2 are the most complete, fulfilling, content-packed games. If you're emulating, get Sacred Gold or Volt White, they're extensive hacks that add all unavailable pokemon and change add to the move pool of every pokemon.

Platinum is also okay, but stay the fuck away from Diamond and Pearl, they're irredeemable miscarriages of entertainment.

Nope you can't choose Flannery over Wattson because lolRock Smash, and even if you decide to Skip Brawly you still are forced to travel the path the games directs you.

And yes the game is linear exactly because of that. You have crossroads but you can't use them freely and the games conveniently points the only route you can follow. Sound pretty linear to me

It had redeeming features, like every other multimillion dollar AAA title. It's still the undeniable low point of the series and it's plagued by shitty design an indefensible art direction.

I bought that shit day one and I haven't been as disappointed by anything in my life.

My main issue with later generations is the psychic ghost combat change. That and the introduction of a new types that seem poop but that was in gen II so, I'll have to jump in somewhere, I don't have diamond, pearl, or platinum though

R/S weren't the best either, but D/P dropped the ball in so many ways. Very weak visuals, little-to-no use of the touch screen beyond the Poketch, extremely slow and sluggish interface and general play speed, etc. It was a technical nightmare.

Not going to hold the region or Pokemon against the games (though I didn't really care for either, Sinnoh was pretty forgettable region with even more forgettable trainers) as that's all subjective.

B/W are what D/P should have been.

Kanto and, to a smaller extent Johto are the only games tht could be considered non-linear.
But then again both regions are quite small compared to Hoenn, Sinnoh and Unova so you don't have much to sidetrack anyway

I'm honestly not sure. Some people think there's going to be another gap--lack of backwards compatibility like in Gen 3. I find that unlikely, but if it does happen, you're probably better off waiting for Gen 6. That would make it a true fresh start.

D/P barely used the touch screen (though the C-Gear wasn't much better) when stuff like the PC box or party management were just SCREAMING to be used with it. I really think they could have done MUCH more with the battle scenes in D/P too, they feel so static and lifeless compared to B/W.

Everything about D/P felt slow and unpolished, from the menus to the battles, and they felt like such half-assed games when just looking at them technically (not speaking about the story, style or anything subjective here.) B/W wasn't graphically much more impressive than D/P, so it's not a matter of GF simply not being familiar with the hardware, it was all stuff that easily could have been done in 2006 if they had been so inclined. But of course hindsight is 20/20.

Those people are dumb. We have no reason to believe transferring Pokemon will not be possible. We didn't get to transfer Pokemon from the GB games to GBA because of hardware limitations at the time and the fact that they completely overhauled the EV/IV system and added a ton of stuff that wasn't there in past games. Would have been a huge headache to get every Pokemon from your GB game to transfer smoothly and add all that new and changed data.

They're still selling copies of B/W, B/W2 and even HG/SS at retail stores, I see no reason for them to, more or less, shoot those games in the foot while they're still moving units by intentionally making them incompatible with the new games.

Exactly.

DS games and 3DS games can be connected, as evidenced by Dream Radar. You might need a spare DS, though. Or perhaps, as some have suggested, there could be an online system to make the process go nice and smoothly? Kind of like an online Pokémon Box/My Pokémon Ranch. I think providing that kind of option would earn Game Freak a lot of points with fans.
